History and Character of Leidschendam-Voorburg

Leidschendam-Voorburg was formed in 2002 by the merger of the separate municipalities of Leidschendam and Voorburg. Voorburg has a rich history as one of the oldest settlements in the region — traces of Roman habitation have been found along the former course of the Rhine. Leidschendam developed later as a typical post-war growth municipality, with the characteristic housing estates from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The municipality has a green character, with the Vliet corridor serving as a recognisable waterway linking Leidschendam and Voorburg. For motorists the proximity of both The Hague and the A4 and A12 is striking: as a resident you can quickly reach the motorway while at the same time driving through quiet avenues. That contrast is perfect for a varied driving lesson environment.

Traffic Situation in Leidschendam-Voorburg

Prins Clauslaan and the Leidschendam axis are the main connecting roads towards The Hague and the national motorways. During rush hours (07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:30) there are regular delays towards the city. The roads are well laid out but require learner drivers to position themselves in good time at junctions and bus stops.

Voorburg town centre has a pleasant shopping area with narrow streets, pedestrian crossings and heavy foot traffic, particularly on Saturday mornings. Here cycle paths and carriageways are sometimes not clearly separated, requiring extra attention. Leidschendam has several bridges with traffic lights over the Vliet, which beginners find challenging because of the narrow passages and waiting drivers behind them.

In the residential areas 30 km/h zones with speed humps are the norm. These are ideal practice locations for unlocking basic skills: smooth braking before humps, driving in a cul-de-sac and parking alongside the kerb.

Voorburg town centre has paid parking. Rates and time windows are shown on the pay-and-display machines and at lv.nl — always check current information. In residential areas parking is largely free, but some streets near the centre fall under residents-only parking. For driving lessons this is convenient: the instructor can easily pick you up from a quiet street without any pay zones.

There is a public car park available at the Leidschendam shopping centre. The municipality has no large multi-storey car parks; parking policy is more focused on spreading than on centralised garages.
