Driving Lessons in Delft — from canals to motorway
Delft is a city of two faces: a historic centre with narrow streets and small bridges, and a modern outer ring with motorways and large roundabouts. Driving lessons in Delft with Rijschool Denhaag means mastering both worlds — a strong preparation for your CBR exam.
History and Character of Delft
Delft is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Netherlands. The city centre with its canals, almshouses and characteristic buildings attracts many visitors each year. At the same time Delft is a modern university city — TU Delft brings a young, international population and a vibrant student life. That blend of historic and modern gives the city a unique atmosphere and a varied traffic environment.
For learner drivers Delft is attractive due to its layered nature: you practise manoeuvres on narrow historic streets, drive on the motorway via the A13 and get to know large roundabouts on the city's outskirts. This prepares you as an all-round driver.
Traffic Situation in Delft
Haagweg and Zuidwal are important through roads across Delft's centre. They connect the north and south of the city and run partly alongside the canals. Traffic here is mixed: cyclists, pedestrians, buses and cars share spaces that are not always wide. During the morning and evening rush hours (07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:30) it is busy.
On the city's outskirts runs the A13 (The Hague–Rotterdam), with several junctions for Delft. The slip roads are a good training ground for building speed and merging. Kruithuisweg and Provincial Road N470 are busy connecting arteries between Delft and neighbouring municipalities such as Pijnacker-Nootdorp.
Delft also has a railway line running through the city — now largely put underground, which has greatly improved traffic flow in the centre. The new station area is, however, a complex zone with buses, cyclists and pedestrians crossing the carriageway.
Parking in Delft
Paid parking applies in Delft city centre. Rates vary by zone and time — consult delft.nl or the parking apps for current information. Around the centre there are several car parks and multi-storey garages; the car parks near the station and city centre are well accessible. In residential areas outside the centre partial residents-only parking applies.
For learner drivers Delft also offers challenging parking practice: narrow streets alongside canals with limited space on either side are a realistic situation for parallel parking. In residential areas parking bays on the pavement are common practice.
Accessibility for People with Disabilities
Delft has disabled parking spaces near municipal buildings, the hospital and the city centre. The historic centre is not, however, fully accessible for people with a disability due to narrow paving and cobblestones. Candidates with special driving needs are welcome at Rijschool Denhaag — we will find a suitable solution together.
Roadworks and Disruptions
Delft has carried out major infrastructure projects in recent years (including the railway tunnel). Various related works are still ongoing around the station area and Phoenixstraat. Your instructor knows the diversions and adjusts the lesson route so that you learn to deal with temporary traffic situations.
Gevaarlijke punten voor beginners
-
Delft City Centre — Narrow Canal Streets Historic Delft centre, around Oude Delft and Nieuwe Delft
Streets alongside the canals are sometimes so narrow that passing oncoming traffic is difficult. Parked cars, bicycles and the occasional tourist group make the situation unpredictable. Requires low speed and early position selection.
-
Delft Station Area Around Delft Central Station
A busy junction with buses, cyclists, pedestrians and taxis crossing the carriageway. Multiple lanes with markings that are unclear to beginners. Calm driving and good forward observation are essential.
-
A13 Slip Roads A13 junctions Delft-Noord and Delft-Zuid
Short slip lanes at the A13 junctions require rapid but controlled speed build-up. Beginners often enter the motorway too slowly, which can create dangerous situations with lorries.
-
Roundabouts on the Outskirts of Delft Delft outskirts, towards Pijnacker and Rijswijk
Several large roundabouts on the city's outskirts have two lanes and high traffic volumes. Lane selection, mirror checks and turning off in good time are crucial skills for new drivers here.
-
Cycle Lanes around TU Campus and Student Areas TU Delft campus and surroundings
Around TU Delft there are very large numbers of cyclists at busy times, even at junctions with traffic lights. Cyclists sometimes ignore red lights — extra vigilance on green is essential.
