History and Character of Pijnacker-Nootdorp
Pijnacker-Nootdorp municipality was formed in 2002 by the merger of the municipalities of Pijnacker and Nootdorp. Both centres have a distinct identity: Pijnacker is an old greenhouse-growing village on the edge of the Delflands Lake and Polder Landscape, while Nootdorp grew into a commuter municipality on the border with The Hague. In recent decades large new-build estates have been developed — Keijzershof and Ypenburg are the best-known examples — transforming the municipality into a modern commuter town.
The combination of historic ribbon development in the outlying area and purpose-planned new-build estates makes Pijnacker-Nootdorp exceptionally varied as a driving area. Quiet residential streets in the new-build literally border narrow polder lanes here.
Traffic Situation in Pijnacker-Nootdorp
The traffic infrastructure in the new-build estates is designed to modern standards: roundabouts largely replace the classic traffic-light junctions. This is precisely what makes it an excellent practice environment for learner drivers — right-of-way rules at roundabouts, cyclists crossing the roundabout, and smoothly entering and leaving the roundabout are all part of daily life here.
On the N223 (Pijnackerweg/Delftweg) and N470, regional connections combine 80 km/h driving with junctions for local traffic. Motorway slip roads to the A13 are within a short distance; the connection via Laan van Nootdorp towards Ypenburg is a busy junction during the morning rush hour. Within the built-up area there are extensive 30 km/h zones with traffic-calming measures (both raised platforms and individual humps) that mix and slow traffic.
Parking in Pijnacker-Nootdorp
In the village centres of Pijnacker and Nootdorp limited paid parking applies, mainly in the immediate vicinity of shopping facilities. The extensive new-build estates have ample parking spaces near residential buildings and neighbourhood shopping centres; this parking is almost always free but sometimes with a maximum parking time. Learner drivers can easily be picked up in most residential streets without causing parking problems.
Accessibility for People with Disabilities
The new-build estates of Pijnacker-Nootdorp are largely designed to be accessible, with lowered kerbs, adapted pedestrian crossings and disabled parking spaces near public facilities. Candidates with a physical disability wishing to sit a driving exam in an adapted vehicle can apply via the CBR through their instructor.
Roadworks and Disruptions
Due to the ongoing new-build developments in Pijnacker-Nootdorp there are regular roadworks in and around new housing estates. Adjustments to existing infrastructure also take place periodically. Always check current information via pijnackernootdorp.nl or ANWB Traffic Information before starting your journey.

At the many roundabouts in Pijnacker-Nootdorp cyclists have no right of way outside the built-up area, but sometimes do within it. Learner drivers regularly confuse this — pay careful attention at each individual roundabout.
-
Raised Humps in 30 km/h Zones Keijzershof residential estates and surroundings of Nootdorp
New-build estates have platform humps and raised junctions that force vehicle speed down. Approaching too fast damages the vehicle and creates an unsettled driving style — timely braking is essential.
