The N44 (Van Alkemadelaan / Wassenaarseweg) is by far the busiest traffic artery in the municipality and connects The Hague with Leiden. An 80 km/h limit applies for most of this route; the road has multiple lanes in each direction but also traffic-light junctions and roundabout approaches. During rush hours there are regular jams, particularly near the Wassenaar-centrum exits.

Within the village you drive along avenues with a separate cycle path, but also along narrow streets in the historic village centre. Pedestrian crossings in the wooded stretch are sometimes unexpected and poorly lit in the evenings. Driving through villa neighbourhoods requires a calm driving style, good responses to playing children and dogs, and attention to the exit constructions of private driveways.

Parking in Wassenaar

In Wassenaar village centre paid parking applies on and around the shopping streets. In the villa avenues and residential areas beyond, parking on the public road is largely free, but the street profile is narrow; double parking or standing for long periods on the carriageway quickly causes disruption. Wassenaar town centre has disabled parking spaces near shops and municipal facilities.
