Regulations

From what age can you take driving lessons?

You can start driving lessons younger than you might think — and for many students it is also the sensible choice. Here you will find exactly how the age rules work.

Starting from 16.5 via 2toDrive

In the Netherlands you can officially start driving lessons from the age of 16.5, thanks to the 2toDrive scheme. You may sit the CBR practical exam once you turn 17. Until your 18th birthday you then drive under supervision — with an approved supervisor beside you. Only from age 18 may you drive independently.

Rijschool Denhaag regularly supports young people starting through 2toDrive. We operate in the The Hague, Zoetermeer, Delft and Rijswijk area and know how best to prepare young learners for both the CBR exam and the supervised driving period that follows.

Why starting early is a smart move

Starting at 16.5 gives you more time to practise before the exam, and you then drive under supervision for a full year. Those extra kilometres make a significant difference: young people who go through 2toDrive demonstrably have fewer accidents in the early years after passing. It is an investment in safety that insurers appreciate too.

The supervisor must have held a driving licence for at least 5 years and must not have consumed any alcohol. For the lessons themselves no supervisor is needed — Rijschool Denhaag takes full care of those. Once the licence is obtained you arrange the supervisor pass through the CBR.
