When do you need a health declaration?
Most students do not need to complete a health declaration. But for certain medical conditions or when applying for a licence later in life, the CBR form is compulsory. We explain how it works.
What is the health declaration and when is it required?
The health declaration is an official CBR form on which you indicate whether you have any medical conditions that could affect your driving ability. Think of epilepsy, insulin-dependent diabetes, heart rhythm disorders, sleep apnoea or serious vision problems. The CBR uses this form to assess whether you are medically fit to take part in traffic.
For most younger students with no known medical conditions the declaration is not required. It is compulsory, however, for anyone applying for a driving licence for the first time who falls under one of the listed categories, and for all applicants aged 75 and over when renewing their licence.
How does the application process work at the CBR?
You apply for the health declaration through Mijn CBR. After completing it, the CBR may approve the declaration, request additional information from your doctor, or refer you to a medical examiner for a medical fitness assessment (IBMN). This process can take several weeks to months, depending on the complexity of the condition.
It is important to start early if you know you need a health declaration. Ideally begin the application before you start driving lessons, so the medical approval is already in place when you are ready for the exam.
