Deaf or hard of hearing? You can absolutely take driving lessons
Deafness or hearing loss does not disqualify you from getting a driving licence. Driving is primarily a visual and tactile skill. The CBR offers accommodations for deaf and hard-of-hearing candidates, and at Rijschool Denhaag we adapt our lessons to your communication needs — so you have exactly the same opportunities as any other student.
Adapting communication in the driving lesson
In practice, deaf and hard-of-hearing students drive very well. Participation in traffic is almost entirely visual: checking mirrors, perceiving hazards, recognising right of way, anticipating other road users. Horns and sound play a supporting role, not a leading one. Deaf drivers compensate by observing even more sharply.
At Rijschool Denhaag we adapt the way we communicate to your situation. This might mean clearer hand signals for simple instructions, a whiteboard or apps for a short explanation before the lesson, or an interpreter who is present for the first few lessons. We discuss what works for you beforehand, so we can use lesson time as efficiently as possible.
We don't teach theory ourselves, but for the practical lessons and the support around the exam we are fully here for you. If you have a preferred language other than Dutch or spoken language, we will find a workable approach together.
Accommodations at the CBR exam
The CBR offers official accommodations for deaf and hard-of-hearing candidates. The examiner can give written instructions instead of spoken commands, or visual signals can be used. You request this adjustment through the CBR when booking your exam — this is done via a written request. We will help you navigate this process.
A sign language interpreter may in some cases be present at the exam. This is a CBR decision made per application. Contact the CBR in good time to discuss the options and get the application under way — do not leave this until just before the exam.
