Can the instructor come to the driving exam? Yes, as a passenger

Many students do not know that their instructor is allowed to be present during the CBR practical exam. Not behind the extra controls, but in the back as an ordinary passenger. That familiar presence at a nerve-wracking moment — students can really feel the difference.

What does the CBR say about the instructor's role?

According to CBR rules, the driving instructor may take a seat in the back of the car as a passenger during the practical exam. This is an officially permitted option. However, the instructor may not communicate with the candidate or the examiner in any way. No words, no gestures, no guidance — they are present solely as a silent witness.

The examiner is in full control of the exam. Any attempt by the instructor to intervene may lead to the immediate termination of the exam. This is a hard CBR rule that we at Rijschool Denhaag always make clear before exam day, so there are no misunderstandings.

The instructor may also decide not to come, or you as the student can indicate that you prefer to go alone. Some students feel freer without the instructor present. Both choices are entirely valid.

Why the presence can still be reassuring

Research and practical experience point in the same direction: students who know and trust their instructor often perform better when that person sits in the back. The familiar face makes the car feel like familiar territory. You are not driving for a stranger in an unfamiliar situation, but in your own lesson car with someone who has guided you for dozens of hours.

At Rijschool Denhaag we always discuss together beforehand whether you would like the instructor to come along. We fully respect your choice. What we always do: in the final lessons we make you thoroughly familiar with the exact exam environment around CBR Rijswijk, so you know the way on your own terms.
