Exam anxiety in the driving test: recognising and overcoming it
Exam anxiety is one of the most common reasons students fail their driving test despite driving perfectly well during lessons. You are certainly not alone. At Rijschool Denhaag we take exam anxiety seriously and work deliberately on building your confidence.
Do you recognise exam anxiety in yourself?
Exam anxiety in the driving test shows itself in different ways. Some students lie awake the night before exam day; others suddenly forget manoeuvres during the exam that they have done correctly hundreds of times. Your heart beats faster, your hands tremble on the wheel, or your mind seems to go blank at the very moment it matters most. These are all signs of exam anxiety.
The good news: exam anxiety is not a personality trait but a learned response. That means you can also unlearn it. The key lies in two things: building confidence through repetition and learning to handle the pressure that an exam brings with it. We help you with both.
During our lessons we openly discuss how you feel about the exam. An instructor who listens and understands makes a world of difference. You do not have to deal with it on your own.
Practical techniques and exam-focused practice
At Rijschool Denhaag we deliberately train under pressure. We drive routes that resemble the CBR exam routes around Rijswijk, give instructions in the same neutral manner as an examiner and simulate the time pressure of a real exam. The more often you rehearse the exam, the more normal the situation starts to feel.
As well as driving skills, we also practise simple breathing techniques: breathe in slowly through your nose, breathe out calmly through your mouth. This calms your nervous system within seconds and can be applied discreetly while you wait for the examiner. Visualisation also helps: picture yourself driving calmly and successfully through the exam.
- Drive exam routes around CBR Rijswijk
- Neutral instruction style that mirrors the examiner
- Breathing exercises for before and during the exam
- Visualisation exercises to build confidence
- Openly discussing nerves without judgement
