Failed — what now?
Failing your driving exam feels disappointing, but it is not a disaster. Nearly half of all candidates fail the first time. What you do next determines how quickly you pass.
Common reasons for failing
Every mistake is recorded during the CBR practical exam. Common causes of failing include: insufficient use of mirrors, braking too late or too early, incorrect right of way, nervousness leading to errors and difficulty merging on the motorway. The examiner assesses not only technique but also driving style and anticipation.
After the exam you receive an assessment form with a summary of the mistakes made. That form is worth its weight in gold. Rijschool Denhaag will go through it with you in the very next lesson, so you know exactly what to work on.
The process after a failed exam
After a failed exam we schedule an evaluation lesson as quickly as possible. We drive the exam points again, focusing on the mistakes from the assessment form. Depending on what went wrong you will need 2 to 5 extra lessons before you are ready for another attempt. We are honest: only when we are confident will we request a new exam date.
A resit exam at the CBR costs approximately €120 to €130 (depending on the type of exam and when you book). Factor in extra lessons too. It is therefore smarter — both financially and emotionally — to go in well prepared rather than booking another attempt too hastily.
- Request the CBR assessment form and keep it safe
- Book an evaluation lesson at Rijschool Denhaag as soon as possible
- Practise specifically on the mistakes identified during the exam
- Wait for a new exam date until your instructor gives the green light
- Budget approximately €120–€130 for the CBR resit exam
