Do you need to pass your theory first?
No, you do not need to pass your theory test before you can take driving lessons. But you will need a valid theory certificate before your practical exam. Here is the smartest approach.
The order: what is allowed and what is required
You can start driving lessons straight away without having passed your theory test. Rijschool Denhaag can schedule you immediately for a trial lesson and draw up a full lesson plan. The only firm requirement is that when you sit the CBR practical exam, you must be able to show a valid theory certificate. That certificate is valid for 1.5 years.
The most practical strategy is to do your theory while you are already taking driving lessons. That way you combine theory and practice and the material sticks better. If you leave your theory too late, your practical journey can be delayed if the certificate expires just before your exam.
Theory preparation: self-study or a course?
We don't teach theory ourselves — that is a deliberate choice. For theory preparation we refer you to accredited theory schools or reliable self-study apps such as the one from the CBR itself. The CBR online practice exam is free and an excellent benchmark. Many students pass their theory perfectly well on their own using apps and practice books.
Want a course? Choose an accredited theory school in The Hague or the surrounding area. Check the pass rates and whether they work with up-to-date CBR material. Theory study combines well with your driving lessons with us: you will quickly recognise in practice what you have studied at home.
